Smart Systems, Real Results: Case Studies in E Tech Group’s SCADA Solutions

In today’s industrial landscape, efficiency, reliability, and security are necessary for long-term viability. Companies across all sectors are facing increased demand, labor shortages, and the ever-moving targets of advancing technology and changing regulatory environments. Operations are expected to meet these challenges with consistent quality of goods and services, which means they’re managing increasingly complex systems, often piecemeal as they try to roll with the industry punches.

This is where integrated SCADA systems come in. SCADA integration (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) provides a central hub that integrates automation equipment and sensors across a facility and allows the user access to monitoring, data collection and analytics in real-time. Where manual monitoring and siloed control systems have limited capabilities, and therefore, limited lifespan, SCADA integration will continue to prove invaluable when applied strategically.

E Tech Group’s SCADA solutions have helped hundred of clients over the hurdle of modernizing their facilities in a way that’s set up for the changes we all know are coming. With industry expanding as quickly as technology is evolving, there’s no end to the possible applications of SCADA systems and, subsequently, their possible benefits.

A Short Intro to SCADA Systems & Their Benefits

SCADA systems are able to connect and monitor automated processes across an operation and can be integrated with automation technology from many different brands and stages of development. They’re essentially a bridge between legacy and modern control systems, which allows companies to move into Industry 4.0 without massive control system retrofits, which, for smaller operations, can be financially preclusive. It also allows companies to continue to scale as demand increases and adapt as old equipment is replaced and new automation technology emerges.

Unlike traditional monitoring methods, SCADA integration provides a clear picture of processes, end-to-end, providing data-driven insights that unlock the door to major operational enhancements like predictive maintenance, remote access, and reliable compliance. For larger operations, SCADA enables this full-spectrum vision to be combined across multiple facilities, enhancing consistency of processes and output. The result is an integrated control system that doesn’t just alert to issues but helps predict, prevent, and respond to them.

Let’s run through just a few past projects where our integrated SCADA services were able to transform a company’s processes and, in turn, their ability to remain competitive in their sector.

Food & Beverage Automation Integration Cases

Industrial food and beverage production is a highly regulated field because production, storage, and distribution practices directly affect public health and safety. Integrated SCADA systems help food and beverage companies build a strong foundation of safety and quality assurance.

Almonds & Automation: Migrating to a Modernized System

We also designed user-friendly HMIs that mimicked the appearance of the old control system to ease the transition, which also minimized training costs for the client.

The result? In just 4 months, the client was fully migrated to the new system and was able to immediately experience the efficiency and reliability benefits of enhanced quality assurance, cross-functional connectivity, and reduced downtime, all on a system that is easy to manage, reconfigure, and scale.

Winery Wins: Modernizing Fermentation with PLC & SCADA Upgrades

A long-standing California winery partnered with E Tech Group to upgrade the control system for their fermentation process because the obsolete hardware and controls were causing maintenance problems and downtime. Our automation team performed a thorough assessment of their current setup and designed a control system upgrade that would eliminate the problems they were experiencing (and more!). We consolidated 3 PLC-controlled areas into a single PLC with remote I/O and integrated with the Ignition SCADA platform. Our project team also added several new HMIs that resolved numerous compatibility, electrical, and programming challenges.

The result? Instant ROI. By upgrading to an integrated SCADA solution, the winery streamlined operations, improved fermentation uptime, and removed the challenges associated with maintaining legacy control systems.

Life Sciences SCADA Automation Strategies

The field of life sciences may be even more tightly regulated than the food and beverage sector; the pharmaceuticals, biologics, medical devices, etc that companies create and distribute have the potential to save countless lives or cause major harm. High-end manufacturing automation solutions and building management systems are an absolute necessity, and that’s where integrated SCADA systems shine.

Epidemic Emergency: SCADA Facilitates Rapid Scaling for Vaccines

The 2021 COVID pandemic challenged manufacturers everywhere, but none so much as vaccine research and production companies. A biopharma company reached out to E Tech Group at the height of COVID – they needed a massive control system upgrade to scale vaccine production rapidly without compromising compliance. The project was difficult – the pandemic brought major supply chain delays, and the project scope was undefined. We came up with a hybrid SCADA solution by integrating Rockwell’s PlantPAx 5.0 with available process controllers and supplemented with PLCs compatible with PlantPAx 4.10 – truly integrated SCADA services.

The result? Despite different products and platforms, E Tech Group built a unified automation system that was accessible through a single HMI. The newly integrated SCADA system allowed the client to reach full operational capacity at scale, with a flexible design provides the opportunity to scale further in the future.

Automation Environment: Controls for Groundwater Treatment in the Field

An environmental management company relying on an aging SCADA system faced limited functionality and was unable to properly monitor their groundwater treatment processes remotely. The control system’s legacy HMI only allowed one remote desktop session at a time and relied on a vintage VPN, making field operators’ jobs much harder than they should be. E Tech Group migrated their processes to the integrated Ignition SCADA platform, which enabled secure mobile access for multiple users. Our automation engineers also upgraded servers and network equipment, and integrated Ignition Alarming with power protection that automated outage alerts and safe shutdowns.

The result? The clients – in the office, lab, and the field – were able to do their jobs without the hassle of limited legacy controls; the new web-based SCADA solution expanded remote visibility and system reliability, enhancing their groundwater remediation efforts.

Advancing Mining & Metals with Automation Solutions

In the lifecycle of a metal, it travels through several distinct sectors of industry, from extraction to processing and refinement to casting and rolling. Defects, waste, downtime, and siloed control systems plague each of these sectors, making SCADA integration a strategic automation solution for mining operations and metals manufacturers.
